TSAPO's Genealogical Carrier Testing Program
Thank you for your interest in TSAPO's Genealogical Carrier Testing Program. TSAPO uses genealogical research from families who currently have a child affected by Infantile Tay-Sachs to locate and test extended family members who are at risk of carrying a Tay-Sachs mutation due to their common ancestry. We are beginning our program by focusing on Infantile Tay-Sachs, but if we are successful we will expand it to related diseases.
TSAPO has found 6 carriers so far and counting! 10 people have been tested because of TSAPO!
This program is currently only available to families who have a child who has (or had) Infantile Tay-Sachs. We hope to expand our program to other forms of Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases. Please contact us if you are interested in using genealogical research to help additional carriers. If you already have extensive genealogical information and have already identified the oldest living carrier in your family, it will be easier to enter you into our program.
TSAPO's program comprises two steps. The first is to identify the oldest living ancestor who carries each mutation, from the affected child’s mother and father. During this phase, we will provide information about how to proceed with testing and will make a determination whether and how to assist with funding for the carrier testing. The second step in our program is to identify that ancestor’s parent’s and sibling’s direct descendants so they may be tested to see if they are a Tay-Sachs carrier. During this phase, we will request additional information regarding the branches of the family that are related to people who test positive.
